Lenten Poem XVIII of XXXIII
What to expect when you check us out
So, as you visit with us, as you check us out, look around you. There are subtle, yet significant clues communicating who we are. Bibles are available on a table in the back. The Welcome Center is just inside the door, as are the banners greeting you as you look up. We are casual here. The minister is as likely to dress in business casual, jeans and sportscoat, or jeans in the summer. The coat rack is made from repurposed wood pallets, as is the stage material. But pay close attention to the pulpit. The pulpit table is custom made. It too, is repurposed. It had once been a wine barrel. The three legs are made from barrel staves and the top is the barrel lid. It still bears the imperfections from its previous life. One side of the staves are left with the char from their beginning. The red wine has stained the oak a brownish red. Nail holes are still evident, as are stampings, gouges and other imperfections. The wood has been left with the imprint of its past. Yet it has been transformed. Once a wine barrel, it now serves as the pulpit in a Christian church. The Gospel is preached from it. For that reason, the base is a bit of native stone. It represents Matt. 16:13-20, Peter’s declaration that Jesus is the Son of God and Messiah, and Jesus’ response that it was upon that truth , “Upon this rock,” He would build His church. The staves, the legs, are three in number to represent the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is made of wood to represent the wood of the cross. The reddish-brown stain left from the wine and the char represent Jesus’ blood shed for our sins. The refinished top represents our refinement in Christ. The pulpit, fittingly, represents us—being transformed. It fits the Gospel.
